Boles, Coddenham, Suffolk, England, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 16.9) on an unfiltered CCD image taken on Jan. 12.148 UT with a 0.35-m reflector in the course of the U.K. Nova/Supernova Patrol. The new object is located at R.A. = 11h03m12s.33, Decl. = +11o04'38".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 9".0 west and 1".5 north of the center of NGC 3506. W. Li, University of California at Berkeley, reports an independent discovery of the object by M. Schwartz on a 0.8-m Tenagra II telescope image on Jan. 13.49 UT. Li also then detected the object on a KAIT image on Jan. 13.55; it was about mag 16 and located at 9".5 west and 1".5 north of the nucleus of NGC 3506. The supernova is not present on Boles' images from 2002 Nov. 4 (limiting mag 18.5) or Apr. 4 (limiting mag 19.0), and it is not present on Palomar Sky Survey II red (1989.936) and blue (1996.301) plates.
