Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; and T. Matheson, National Optical Astrononmy Observatory, report that a spectrogram (range 350-740 nm) of SN 2005he (cf. IAUC 8621), obtained on Oct. 27.12 UT by Modjaz with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-II supernova with strong H_alpha emission, a H_beta P-Cyg profile, and other elements in absorption. Adopting a recession velocity of 7490 km/s for the host galaxy, as measured from H_alpha emission of an H II region in the host galaxy, the expansion velocity derived from the minimum of the H_beta line is about 8700 km/s. A spectrogram of 2005hg (cf. IAUC 8623), taken as above on Oct. 27.30, reveals it to be a type-Ic supernova around maximum; the spectrum is similar to spectra of SN 1994I (Filippenko et al. 1995, Ap.J. 450, L11) taken around maximum light.
