Wong, D. Pooley, and F. J. D. Serduke, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 330-1040 nm), obtained on July 4 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector (+ Kast spectrograph) at Lick Observatory, shows that SN 2006dm (CBET 568) is of type Ia, about 3-7 days before maximum brightness. The Si II/Ti II absorption at 580 nm is relatively strong, suggesting that the object might be slightly subluminous. However, the continuum is quite blue and the Ti II absorption near 420 nm is weak or absent, unlike the case in the very subluminous SN 1991bg (Filippenko et al. 1992, A.J. 104, 1543).
