Monard reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 16.1 +/- 0.2) on images taken on July 17.150 and 18.075 UT with a 0.30-m reflector near Pretoria, South Africa. The new object is located at R.A. = 3h17m14s.19, Decl. = -32o34'31".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 12" east and 2" north of the nucleus of NGC 1288. Nothing is visible at this location on the Digitized Sky Survey (limiting red mag 20.5) or on Monard's image from July 4.139 (limiting red mag 18.5).
