Stanishev, Physics Department, Stockholm University, reports that a spectrum of SN 2006gi (cf. IAUC 8751) -- obtained on Sept. 20.23 UT with the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC; range 350-920 nm) by T. Pursimo, C. Henriksen, and D. Sharapov -- shows it to be a type-Ib supernova at, or a few days after, maximum light. The spectrum is similar to those of SNe 1990I (Elmhamdi et al. 2004, A.Ap. 426, 963) and 1984L (Wheeler and Leverault 1985, Ap.J. 294, L17).
