Anupama, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, report that a spectrum (range 350-920 nm) of SN 2006it (cf. CBET 660), obtained on Oct. 8.73 UT with the Indian Astronomical Observatory's 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (+ HFOSC), shows it to be a young type-IIP supernova, a few days after the explosion. The spectrum shows a blue continuum with well-developed P-Cyg profiles of the hydrogen Balmer lines H_alpha and H_beta. The spectrum is similar to that of SN 1999em (cf. IAUC 7294, 7296) a week past explosion (Leonard et al. 2001, PASP 114, 35). Adopting a recession velocity of 4650 km/s for the host galaxy (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies), the minimum of the P-Cyg profile of H_alpha indicates an expansion velocity of about 10000 km/s.
