IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2006iw N. Morrell, G. Folatelli, and S. Gonzalez, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that a spectrum (range 380-920 nm) of SN 2006iw (cf. CBETs 663, 667; IAUC 8758), obtained on Oct. 10.14 UT with the Las Campanas du Pont 2.5-m telescope (+ WFCCD spectrograph), shows it to be a young type-II supernova. The data present a blue continuum with superimposed broad P-Cyg features of H and He I. Adopting for the parent galaxy a recession velocity of 9226 km/s (from SDSS), an expansion velocity of 11670 km/s is derived for the minimum of the H_beta absorption -- somewhat lower than the velocities obtained from the absorption components of H_alpha and He I 587.6-nm (12160 and 12230 km/s, respectively).
