Benetti, M. Turatto, and E. Cappellaro, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova; and V. Lorenzi Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), report that a spectrum of SN 2007av (cf. CBET 901), obtained on Mar. 22.86 UT with the 3.5-m TNG (+ DOLORES; range 330-808 nm, resolution 1.4 nm), shows it to be a type-II supernova caught a few days after explosion. The spectrum consists of a blue continuum overimposed by P-Cyg profiles of H-Balmer and He I 587.5-nm lines. Adopting a recession velocity of 1394 km/s for the parent galaxy (from Giovanelli et al. 1997, A.J. 114, 122; via NED), the expansion velocities deduced from H-alpha and H-beta minima are about 11700 and 10800 km/s, respectively.
