Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Yoshimi Ichimura (Yoshimi-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama-ken, Japan) of an apparent supernova (mag 16.6) on two 40-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag 18.0) taken on Dec. 20.78 UT using a 0.28-m f/8 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Nakano provides his measurement for the position of 2007ss from Ichimura's 'BMP' image: R.A. = 12h41m06s.07, Decl. = +50o23'28".7 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".6 east and 7".9 south of the center of NGC 4617; Nakano also measured mag 15.2 for 2007ss from the same image. Nothing was visible at this location on a frame taken by Ichimura two years ago (no limiting magnitude provided), and Nakano adds that nothing is visible at this location on the Digitized Sky Survey (again, no limiting magnitude provided). K. Itagaki (Yamagata, Japan) has confirmed the presence of 2007ss on an unfiltered CCD exposure taken on Dec. 21.606 with a 0.60-m f/5.7 reflector, providing mag 15.5 and position end figures 06s.11, 28".7 (offset 1".8 east, 7".8 south). The type-II supernova 2005ab also occurred in NGC 4617 (cf. IAUC 8478, 8479, 8480). Ichimura is also a discoverer of comet C/1987 W1 and SN 2005lx.
