Electronic Telegram No. 1197 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2008C IN UGC 3611 K. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO); and H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, report that a low-resolution (R about 1200 at H_alpha) spectrum (range 400-750 nm) of 2008C (cf. CBET 1195), taken on Jan. 4.8 UT with the BAO 1.01-m telescope, shows wide absorption features of Si II and Fe II, which is typical for type-Ia supernovae near maximum light. Assuming the recession velocity of UGC 3611 to be 4983 km/s (Pantoja et al. 1997, A.J. 133, 905), the expansion velocity (derived from the absorption minimum of Si II 635.5-nm) is 10300 km/s.
