Arbour, South Wonston, Hants, U.K., reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 17.6) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting magnitude about 18.6) taken on Feb. 1.7889 UT using a 30-cm f/6.3 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector (+ Starlight Xpress CCD camera) in the course of his supernova patrol. The new object is located at R.A. = 20h34m45s.35, Decl. = +60o05'57".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 53" west and 196" south of the center of NGC 6946. Nothing is visible at this position on the Digitized Sky Survey blue (1990 Aug. 15) or red (1991 July 11) plates. Arbour adds that eight confirming images of 2008S taken by T. Boles (Coddenham, England) on Feb. 2.763 yields magnitude 17.1 and position end figures 45s.36, 57".9. Eight previous supernovae have been recorded in NGC 6946, all brighter than mag 15 except for 2002hh (cf. IAUC 8005, 8007), which was highly reddened.
