Li and A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images: SN 2008 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2008as Feb. 29.38 10 21 47.89 -19 29 42.0 16.9 3".0 W, 0".6 S Additional KAIT magnitudes for 2008as: Jan. 15.42 UT, [18.5; Feb. 7.39, 16.2; Feb. 17.42, 16.7. S. Blondin, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that a spectrogram (range 400-1000 nm) of 2008as, obtained by P. Challis on Mar. 1.24 UT with the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope (+ LDSS3), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova around one month past maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra, using the Supernova Identification code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), indicates that 2008as is most similar to the type-Ia supernova 1996X at 32 days past maximum.
