Covarrubias, Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and Anglo-Australian Observatory; and N. Morrell, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report a spectroscopic observation (range 400-1000 nm) obtained on Apr. 22.24 UT with the Magellan II Clay telescope (+ LDSS3) at Las Campanas Observatory, which shows 2008bu (cf. CBET 1341) to be a young type-II supernova. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra via the 'superfit' tool (Howell et al. 2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190) gives a very good match with the spectrum of SN 1993W at four days after explosion. Assuming for the host galaxy (ESO 586-G2) the NED recession velocity of 6630 km/s (Theureau et al. 1998, A.Ap. Suppl. 130, 333) an expansion velocity of 9200 km/s is derived for the minimum of the H_beta absorption.
