Poznanski, T. N. Steele, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a low-quality (due to clouds) CCD spectrum (range 320-920 nm), obtained on Apr. 28 UT with the Keck I 10-m telescope (+ LRIS), shows that 2008ay (CBET 1292) is probably a type-Ib supernova. However, H-alpha absorption appears to be visible, suggesting that the classification may actually be type IIb. Weak Si II 635.5-nm absorption may also be present.
