Morrell, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, reports that spectroscopy (range 380-925 nm), obtained on May 11.40 UT at Las Campanas Observatory with the du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD), shows that 2008ci (cf. CBET 1369) is a type-II supernova about 3-4 weeks after explosion. The 'Supernova Identification' code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) gives very good matches with the spectra of SN 2004et and SN 2006bp at 20 and 34 days past explosion, respectively. Adopting for the host galaxy the NED recession velocity of 9382 km/s (Theureau et al. 2005, A.Ap. 430, 373), the minimum of the H_beta absorption yields an expansion velocity of 6200 km/s.
