Quimby, California Institute of Technology (CIT); D. A. Howell and M. H. van Kerkwijk, University of Toronto; and S. R. Kulkarni, CIT, report the discovery of a supernova (magnitude r' = 21.3) in two sets of images (separated by 4.5 hr) taken on May 10 UT with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope during the COVET program (cf. CBET 1355). SN 2008cj is located at R.A. = 12h31m50s.71, Decl. = +14d01'13".6 (equinox 2000.0). Spectroscopy on May 11 with the Keck I telescope (+ LRIS) yields a spectrum that is consistent with a type-Ia supernova at seven days past maximum and at redshift z = 0.238.
