Lee, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 340-1020 nm), obtained on May 17 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector (+ Kast spectrograph) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2008cl (CBET 1378) is a type-Ia supernova less than 1 week past maximum brightness. Removing a host-galaxy recession velocity of 19017 km/s (Kochanek et al. 2001, Ap.J. 560, 566), the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature is found to be blueshifted by about 11000 km/s.
