Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 14.4 +/- 0.1) on unfiltered CCD images taken on May 29.804 and 30.81, with an earlier image from May 6.793 also showing the new object at mag 13.4. SN 2008cq is located at R.A. = 14h21m09s.61, Decl. = -29o15'04'.9 (equinox 2000.0), which is 9" west of the core of a small galaxy. (Also nearby is ESO 446-53, a small irregular galaxy with no distinct nucleus.) Nothing is visible at the position of 2008cq on the Digitized Sky Survey (limiting red mag 20.5) or on Monard's images taken on 2006 May 30.87 (limiting mag 18.0) and earlier.
