Dennefeld, Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris and University Pierre et Marie Curie; M. J. Arevalo, University of La Laguna and Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias; T. Brozek, Torun; A. Candian, Nottingham; C. Cardoso, Exeter; and J. C. Leyder, Liege -- participants of the Seventh NEON Observing School (cf. IAUC 7463) -- and A. Harutyunyan, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, report that a low-signal-to- noise spectrogram (range 380-820 nm, resolution 0.55 nm) of 2008dq (cf. CBET 1417), obtained on June 29.98 UT with the Isaac Newton Telescope (+ IDS) at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, shows it to be a type-Ic supernova. The best fit to this spectrum found by GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/0804.1939) is with that of the type-Ic supernova 2004aw at 21 days after maximum (Taubenberger et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1459). The spectrum shows P-Cyg profiles of Ca II (H and K), O I 777.4-nm, and Fe II blends. A CCD image of SN 2008dq obtained on June 25.90 at the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC) by T. Pursimo (NOT) and participants J. Johansson (Portsmouth), I. Misgeld (European Southern Observatory, Garching), M. Monguio (Barcelona), and M. Spavone (Napoli) yields an R magnitude of 18.4.
