Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 18.0 +/- 0.3) on an unfiltered CCD image taken on July 5.687 UT, with confirming images showing the new object at mag 17.8 +/- 0.2 on July 7.692 and 8.690; further inspection suggests that 2008ef may be faintly visible on images taken on June 19.719 (limiting mag 18.5) and even June 5.705 (limiting mag 19). SN 2008ef is located at R.A. = 10h24m17s.17, Decl. = -32o29'12".6 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2" east and 15" south of the core of the galaxy NGC 3241. Nothing is visible at this position on images taken by Monard on May 24.8 (limiting mag 18.5) and earlier, or on Digitized Sky Survey images (limiting red mag 20.5). Additional unfiltered magnitudes for 2008ef from Monard: July 9.688, 18.1; 10.705, 17.9; 13.695, 17.7; 19.701, 17.9.
