Electronic Telegram No. 1458 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Kirshner, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, report that a noisy spectrogram (range 350-740 nm) of 2008el (cf. CBET 1456), obtained on Aug. 1.37 UT by P. Berlind with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-II supernova. The spectrum consists of a blue continuum with shallow P-Cyg profiles of the Balmer series. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2008el is most similar to the type-II-plateau supernova 2004et at two days before maximum light (approximately 2 weeks past explosion). A recession velocity of cz = 10826 +/- 23 km/s is derived using six emission lines in the host-galaxy spectrum, consistent with the 21-cm H I redshift posted via NED (10862 +/- 9 km/s; from Giovanelli and Haynes 1993, A.J. 105, 1271).
