Chornock, University of California, Berkeley; and L. Kewley, University of Hawaii, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 310-925 nm), obtained with LRIS on the Keck I 10-m telescope on Aug. 27.55 UT, reveals that 2008fc (CBET 1481) is a type-II supernova within a couple of weeks after explosion. The absorption minimum of H-beta is blueshifted by approximately 11000 km/s, after correcting for a host-galaxy redshift of 5090 km/s (measured from narrow emission lines in the spectrum). The H-alpha absorption profile is unusually broad, with the blue wing extending out to 604 nm (= 24800 km/s). Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2008fc is most similar to the type-IIP supernova 2006bp at 7 days after maximum light.
