Prieto, Ohio State University, reports that optical spectra (range 410-750 nm; FWHM resolution 0.5 nm) of supernovae 2008gm and 2008go were obtained with the Hiltner 2.4-m telescope (+ Modspec) at MDM Observatory on Oct. 24.2 UT. The spectrum of 2008gm (CBET 1549) is characteristic of a type-IIn supernova, and not a type-Ib/c event (as suggested on CBET 1551), showing a blue continuum with Balmer lines in emission with multiple components superimposed; the H_alpha and H_beta line profiles are both well-fitted by the sum of two Gaussian components with FWHM of 300 and 1600 km/s. The spectrum of 2008go (cf. CBET 1553) shows that it is a type-Ia supernova before maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2008go is a normal type-Ia event with a best-fitted age of 1 +/- 5 days before maximum and redshift 0.059 +/- 0.005. The redshift obtained from the spectrum of 2008go is consistent with the redshift of the likely host galaxy, 2MASX J22104396-2047256, of 0.062 (18710 km/s; Metcalfe et al. 1989 MNRAS, 236, 207). An expansion velocity of 14700 km/s is derived from the absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature, using a recession velocity of 18710 km/s for the host galaxy.
