Garnavich, University of Notre Dame, reports that a spectrogram (range 340-800 nm; resolution 0.87 nm) of 2008gp (cf. CBET 1555) was obtained with the Apache Point 3.5-m telescope (+ Dual Imaging Spectrograph) on Oct. 30.3 UT. The spectrum shows a blue continuum with broad, deep features of Si II and Ca II, consistent with a young type-Ia supernova. The center of the host galaxy also fell on the slit, and a redshift of z = 0.034 is found from Balmer absorption lines and narrow emission features. Correcting for this recession velocity, the minimum flux of the Si II absoption has a blue-shifted velocity of 12000 km/s.
