Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that a spectrum (range 350-740 nm) of 2008hs (cf. CBET 1598), obtained on Dec. 1 UT by J. Hora with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova near maximum light. The spectrum has spectral features consistent with those of SN 1991bg (Filippenko et al. 1992, A.J. 104, 1543), such as a deep Si II 580.0-nm feature, though (over the spectral range) the spectrum is also consistent with those of "normal" type-Ia supernovae. The spectral shape and lack of narrow Na D absorption suggest that the supernova is not highly reddened; 2008hs is probably an underluminous type-Ia supernova or it is younger than its spectrum suggests.
