Garnavich, University of Notre Dame; and C. L. Gerardy, Florida State University, obtained a spectrogram (range 0.7-2.4 microns) of 2008hv (cf. CBET 1601) on Dec. 4.52 UT with the Infrared Telescope Facility (+ SpeX in low-dispersion mode). The spectrum shows a deep Ca II triplet absorption feature, as well as Mg II and O I lines. The infrared spectrum is consistent with a type-Ia supernova observed a week before maximum light. The strong Ca II absorption is particularly broad and similar to the spectrum of SN 2007qe (CBET 1145). This suggests that 2008hv is a member of the high-velocity-expansion sub-class of type-Ia supernovae (Wang et al. 2008, Ap.J. 675, 626).
