Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (magnitude 16.8 +/- 0.2) from unfiltered CCD images taken on Dec. 19.076 UT and confirmed at mag 16.9 +/- 0.2 on Dec. 20.084. The new object is located at R.A. = 13h02m08s.93, Decl. = -32o47'36".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 23" east and 25" south of the core of the galaxy PGC 44965 = ESO 381-50 (a member of Hickson group 63). Nothing is seen at this position in Digitized Sky Survey images down to red mag 20.5 or on an image of this galaxy taken by Monard on Aug. 23.705 (limiting mag 18.5).
