Oksanen, Muurame, Finland, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 17.3) by Mikko Paivinen (Rajamaki, Finland) and Petri Kehusmaa (Hyvinkaa, Finland) on a 90-s unfiltered exposure (limiting mag 18.3) obtained by Paivinen on Dec. 26.673 UT with a 28-cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ SBIG ST-2000 CCD camera). The new object is located at R.A. = 4h01m02s.15, Decl. = +74o05'48".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 50" north of the center of the galaxy PGC 14286. Nothing is visible at this position on U.K. Schmidt Telescope plates (via the Digital Sky Survey; limiting red mag 20.3 on 1996 Dec. 7; limiting infrared mag 20.1 on 1997 Nov. 23). Kehusmaa obtained several unfiltered confirmation images (limiting mag 19.0) of 2008im at mag 17.6 (yielding position end figures 02s.14, 49".3) on Dec. 27.694 with a 20-cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Apparently all the above astrometry and photometry were measured by A. Oksanen (all the magnitudes measured using an R magnitude from a single USNO-A2.0 reference star). An R_c image taken by Oksanen on Dec. 27.833 with a 40-cm Ritchey-Chretien telescope yields mag R = 17.4 and position end figures 02s.11, 49".1.
