Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that a spectrum (range 360-750 nm) of 2009fs (cf. CBET 1829), obtained on June 4 UT by W. Brown with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-IIn supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that the spectrum of 2009fs best resembles that of the type-IIn supernova 1998S at a phase of 13 days before maximum brightness. The redshift, as measured from emission lines in the host galaxy, is 0.053.
