Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham and R. Williams, California Institute of Technology; E. C. Beshore, and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the CRTS (cf. CBET 1879) discovery of a supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images: SN 2009 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. 2009is July 30.44 2 57 07.15 +18 01 09.2 16.4 Further measurements for 2009is: Feb. 27.14 UT, [18 (CSS); Aug. 1.38, g = 16.4, r = 16.4, i = 16.5, z = 16.3 (Palomar 1.5-m reflector + Gunn filters). A spectrum (range 380-900 nm) was obtained with the SMARTS 1.5-m telescope on Aug. 25.38. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows this to be a type-Ia supernova most similar to SN 2003du at 22 days past maximum light.
