Banerjee, Physical Research Laboratory, report near-infrared J-, H-, and K-band spectroscopy of the nova V5584 Sgr (cf. IAUC 9089) obtained with the Mt. Abu 1.2-m telescope (+ PRL Near-Infrared NICMOS3 Imager/Spectrometer) on Oct. 29.58 and Nov. 3.59 UT. The Oct. 29 spectra show H I Paschen and Brackett lines with strong P-Cyg profiles. Prominent O I lines, C I lines, and N I lines are also seen, accompanied by P-Cyg profiles. The Gaussian FWHM of the absorption and emission components of the Paschen_beta line are 400 and 560 km/s. The separation between the absorption and emission peaks, as estimated from various lines, is typically in the range 550-650 km/s. The spectra taken on Nov. 3.59 show considerable strengthening of the emission components, while the P-Cyg absorption components are present but at reduced intensity. The recorded infrared spectra of V5584 Sgr are typical of the Fe II class of novae. Visual magnitude estimate by K. Hornoch, Vohancice, Czech Republic: Oct. 31.724 UT, 9.5.
