Prieto, Carnegie Observatories, reports that optical spectra (range 400-900 nm; resolution 0.7 nm) of the supernovae 2009kl (cf. CBET 1993) and 2009mg (cf. CBETs 2071, 2077) were obtained with the Magellan-Clay 6.5-m telescope (+ LDSS3) at Las Campanas Observatory on Dec. 21.3 UT. The spectra show that 2009kl is a type-II supernova and 2009mg is a type-Ia supernova. After cross-correlating with a library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2008, Ap.J. 666, 1024), SN 2009kl is found to be is most similar to the type-II-P supernova 2004et at 80 days after explosion, and SN 2009mg is best matched by a normal type-Ia supernova at 10 days after maximum brightness. After correcting the spectrum of SN 2009kl for the recession velocity of its host galaxy, IC 2584 (+4403 km/s; Theureau et al. 1998, A.Ap. Suppl. 130, 333), an expansion velocity of 6000 km/s is measured from the blue-shifted absorption of the H-alpha P-Cyg profile.
