Newton, Portal, AZ, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 16.7) on an unfiltered CCD frame (limiting mag 20.2) taken with the Puckett Observatory 0.60-m automated patrol telescope on Jan. 11.32 UT. The candidate is located at R.A. = 12h10m57s.72, DEC. = +50o28'31".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 65".47 west and 32".1 south of the center of NGC 4157. The new object was confirmed on CCD frames taken on Jan. 12.15 with a 0.60-m reflector, but it does not appear on unfiltered images taken by Puckett on 2001 Mar. 10, May 1 and June 24 (limiting mag about 20.5), or on Palomar Sky Survey images taken on 1995 Apr. 4 (limiting mag about 21.0), 1991 Feb. 10 and 1955 Apr. 15. S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports that the supernova was independently discovered by R. Kushida, Yatsugatake South Base Observatory, on Jan. 11.86 UT at mag 16.3, using 0.40-m Schmidt Cassegrain f/10 + unfiltered CCD with limiting magnitude 19. The object was not present on her survey frames (limiting mag 18) on 2002 May 25 and back to 1996. She gives for the position the end figures 57s.52, 32".7. Supernovae 1937A and 1955A were also recorded in this galaxy.
