Aldering, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, writes that SN 2005cw (cf. IAUC 8567) was discovered independently at red mag approximately 18.8 by the "Nearby Supernova Factory" group in images obtained on July 5.4 UT with the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 1.2-m telescope; a spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) obtained on July 8.6 shows SN 2005cw to be a late type-II supernova (http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=560). Aldering gives the position for the supernova as R.A. = 22h16m39s.61, Decl. = -21o29'28".7 (equinox 2000.0), adding that the offsets reported on IAUC 8567 are within an arcsec or two of their own, suggesting that the Taiwan position was for the galaxy center instead of the supernova.
