Wang, Tsinghua Center for Astrophysics; Y. Qiu and X. Han, National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC); and Y. Zhao, Nanjing University, report that a low-dispersion spectrogram of SN 2005mc (cf. CBET 331, 334), taken on Dec. 26.7 with the NAOC 2.16-m telescope at Xinglong Observatory, reveals it to be a type-Ia supernova around maxmum light. The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database recession velocity for UGC 4414 is 7561 km/s (a 21-cm H I line measurement taken from de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Calaxies, Version 3.9), which implies an expansion velocity of 11000 km/s for the supernova atmosphere, derived from the strong Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature.
