Boselli, Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille; S. Benetti and A. Harutyunyan, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica; and M. Dennefeld, Insitut d'Astrophysique de Paris, report that a spectrogram (range 370-780 nm, resolution 0.7 nm), obtained on Mar. 25.93 UT with the Carelec spectrograph on the 1.93-m telescope at Haute-Provence Observatory, shows that SN 2006az (cf. IAUC 8691) is a type-Ia supernova with an age of 5 +/- 2 days before maximum. The expansion velocity, deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature (which is weaker when compared with normal type-Ia supernovae spectra), is about 10400 km/s (the recession velocity of the parent galaxy is assumed to be 9274 km/s, from de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Cat. of Bright Galaxies, via NED).
