Phillips, and C. Contreras, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that a spectrogram (range 380-920 nm) of SN 2006ay (cf. IAUC 8691), obtained on Mar. 23.28 UT with the Las Campanas 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD spectrograph), shows this to be a type-Ia supernova with an age of about 20-25 days after maximum light. Using the supernova spectrum comparison code 'superfit' of Howell et al. 2005 (Ap.J. 634, 1190), an approximate redshift of 0.09 was determined, which is significantly higher than that of the compact group of galaxies ("Seyfert's Sextet") that appears near the supernova location. Inspection of an image from the "Atlas and Catalog of Interacting Galaxies" (Vorontsov-Velyaminov 1959, Moscow State University), available from the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED), shows a faint object close to the position of the supernova that may be the host galaxy.
