The new object is located at R.A. = 14h42m23s.85, Decl. = -17o14'48".4 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty 0".2 in each coordinate), which is 9" east and 24".6 north of the center of NGC 5728. Nothing was visible at this position on an image taken on Jan. 16 (no limiting magnitude provided). An independent discovery of 2009Y was made by C. Griffith, S. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, on unfiltered KAIT images taken in the course of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search; they provide position end figures 24s.55, 46".3 (offset 9".3 east, 24".7 north) and the following KAIT magnitudes: 2008 July 27.20, [18.5; 2009 Feb. 2.54, 15.3; 4.48, 14.9.
