Drescher, Calamvale, Queensland, Australia, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (red mag 15.0) by Stuart Parker (Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand) on a 55-s unfiltered CCD image taken on Sept. 15.620 UT with a 35-cm Celestron C14 f/6.3 reflector (+ ST8 CCD camera). Parker obtained a confirming image on Sept. 16.317, showing 2009iw at mag 14.6. The new object is located at R.A. = 5h55m25s.63 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = -76o55'15".9 (equinox 2000.0; average of two images; reference-star catalogue USNO-B1.0; measurer Drescher), which is 10" west and 3" south of the nucleus of IC 2160. Nothing is visible at this position on an image taken on July 17.664 by Parker (limiting red magnitude 18.0) or on a Digitized Sky Survey U.K. Schmidt telescope image from 1988 Feb. 22 (limiting red magnitude 18.0). The peculiar-type-Ia supernova 2009J (cf. CBETs 1661, 1665) also appeared in IC 2160, some 15" to the southwest of 2009iw.
