Drescher, Calamvale, Queensland, Australia, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (red mag 15.7) by Stuart Parker (Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand) on unfiltered CCD images obtained by Parker on Nov. 12.524 and 12.599 UT with a 35-cm Celestron C14 f/6.3 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector (+ ST8 camera). A 35-s unfiltered image taken a day earlier (Nov. 11.653) in twilight by Parker also shows the new object. Drescher measures the position of 2009la to be R.A. = 4h22m45s.74, Decl. = -40d36'48".1 (equinox 2000.0; using Astrometrica software with the USNO-B1.0 catalogue), which is 33" east and 45" south of the nucleus of the galaxy NGC 1572. Nothing is visible at this position on an image taken on Oct. 18.554 by Parker (limiting red mag 18.3). A 25-s unfiltered CCD image taken for confirmation by P. Marples (Loganholme, Queensland, Australia) on Nov. 12.53 using a 30.5-cm reflector (+ Starlight Xpress SXVH9 CCD camera) also shows 2009la (no position or magnitude provided).
