Electronic Telegram No. 5343 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Mailing address: Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network 2024 BX_1 P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center; L. Hecht, C. Hamann, and A. Greshake, Museum fuer Naturkunde (MfN), Berlin, and Freie Universitaet, Berlin; and J. Helbert, Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), report that meteorites from the 2024 Jan. 21 impact of 2024 BX_1 (cf. CBET 5334) have been recovered near Ribbeck im Havelland, Germany. A research team comprised of students and staff of the MfN, the DLR, and the Freie Universitaet Berlin started searching on Monday, Jan. 22, but the meteorite appearance was such that finds remained elusive for several days. The first meteorite (weighing 171 g) was found by meteorite hunters F. S. Nikodem, A. Owczarzak, M. Nebelski, and K. Kmieciak on Jan. 25. The next morning, Freie Universitaet student D. Dieter found a 5.3-g meteorite in the area where small meteorites were expected to have fallen, followed by a 3.1-g find by student C. Weihe shortly thereafter. These finds established the location of the strewn field. Since these first recoveries, several tens of meteorites have been found with masses in the range of 2-225 g.
