SUPERNOVA IN NGC 977
L. Rosino, Asiago Astrophysical Observatory, reports the
discovery of a supernova 5" west and 16" south of the nucleus of NGC
977. On Dec. 15.903 UT the photographic magnitude was 15.5.
ENHANCED gamma-RAY EMISSION
R. D. Wills, ESTEC, Noordwijk, communicates the following report
by the Caravane Collaboration: "The European Space Agency's
satellite COS B has detected enhanced emission of high-energy gamma
radiation from the directions l = 98o +/- 2o, b = 0o +/- 2o and l = 110o
+/- 2o, b = +5o +/- 4o, consistent with localized sources of intensity ~
3 x 10**-6 ph cm**-2 s**-1 above 70 MeV. The observation of a field
about 20o in radius centered on l = 101o, b = 0o started on Dec. 10
and is planned to continue until about 1977 Jan. 16. Examination
of earlier data shows that the source at l = 98o was not detected
in Dec. 1975. The location of the source reported on IAUC 2992 has
been refined to l = 136o.5 +/- 0o.5, b = +1o.5 +/- 0o.5."

K. Tomita, Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, writes that the
comet was observed at magnitude 18.0 on Oct. 22.70 UT but had
brightened to magnitude 10.0-10.5 on Oct. 25.71. J. Bortle, Brooks
Observatory, remarks that the comet is still bright and has probably
experienced further small outbursts; his recent total visual
magnitudes estimates, made with a 32-cm reflector, are: Dec. 14.00
UT, 12.1; 14.99, 12.3; 16.06, 12.3; 19.00, 12.4; 20.00, 12.6.
