OPTICAL COUNTERPARTS OF X-RAY SOURCES
P. A. Charles, J. R. Thorstensen and S. Bowyer, University of
California at Berkeley, report that that the Davidsen et al. (1976,
Astrophys. J. 203, 448) candidate for 3U 1728-16 exhibits 4640-4650
A and 4686 A emission, confirming its identification as the optical
counterpart; its similarity to Sco X-1 at x-ray and optical
wavelengths suggests that it may be variable. They have also
discovered a faint star (V ~ 19.2) in the SAS-3 rmc error box of the
flaring x-ray source 3U 0042+32 (Rappaport et al. 1977, submitted
to Nature) that exhibits 4686 A emission and suggest that it is the
optical counterpart; its location (uncertainty +/- 2") is R.A. =
0h42m07s.0, Decl. = +32o44'09" (equinox 1950.0).
