OCCULTATION OF SAO 85009 BY (2) PALLAS ON 1978 MAY 29
     L. H. Wasserman and O. G. Franz, Lowell Observatory, report
that the AGK3 position of this star (AGK3 +25 1763) is in error by
+1" in Decl. whereas the SAO position is correct. Measurement of two
exposures by H. L. Giclas with the 33-cm photographic telescope on
Aug. 5 yields the position of the star as R.A. = 17h17m37s.58, Decl. =
+25o28'54".5 (equinox 1950.0) with respect to 58 reference stars in
the AGK3; end figures from a similar reduction using the SAO Catalogue
are 37s.57, 54".4, and the standard deviation is +/- 0s.01, +/- 0".1.
The central line for the occultation will thus be considerably
north of that predicted by G. E. Taylor in Handb. Br. Astron. Assoc.
for 1978; it should now pass near Portland, Maine; Ottawa, Ontario;
through Lake Superior and along the U.S.-Canadian border to the
Pacific Ocean. Further uncertainties possibly remaining in the
star position and in the Pallas ephemeris could shift the track by
several hundred km, which is comparable to the track's width.

PERIODIC COMET SCHUSTER (1977o)
     R. M. West, European Southern Observatory, provides the following
precise positions, measured from exposures by H.-E. Schuster
with the 100-cm Schmidt telescope at La Silla:
