FABRY-PEROT MEASUREMENT OF RETROGRADE ROTATION OF VENUS' ATMOSPHERE
     K. Serkowski, J. E. Frecker, C. E. KenKnight and E. H. Roland,
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, report: "Retrograde rotation of
Venus' atmosphere was confirmed by observations made on May 21 and
22 UT with the 154-cm reflector and a Fabry-Perot spectrometer that
was built to search for extrasolar planets. Using a diaphragm of
diameter 3" the difference in radial velocity between measurements
made internally tangent to the terminator and then made bisecting
the limb (both on Venus' equator) was found to be (+100 +/- 15) m s**-1.
The value will be diminished by about 10 m s**-1 when allowance is
made for the effect of solar rotation."
