PERIODIC COMET WILD 3 (1980d)
Paul Wild, Astronomical Institute, Berne University, reports
his discovery of a comet on exposures with the 0.4-m Schmidt
telescope at Zimmerwald as follows:
1980 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1
Apr. 11.07708 13 30 57.71 +12 28 25.3 15.5
11.94201 13 30 14.28 +12 29 26.8
12.90417 13 29 25.51 +12 30 22.8
May 7.86337 13 10 01.95 +11 36 05.5 15.5
7.90104 13 10 00.44 +11 35 53.1
The object is diffuse, evidently with a rather strong central
condensation; no tail was reported.
Computations by the discoverer, and also by the undersigned,
show that this is a short-period comet. The following orbit, by
the undersigned, indicates that the comet passed 0.13 AU from
Jupiter in 1976 Aug. Before then q = 4.2 AU, e = 0.12, P = 10.3 years.
