OCCULTATION BY URANUS
     P. Bouchet, European Southern Observatory, reports observations
by C. Perrier, B. Sicardy and himself of the occultation by
Uranus and its rings of star 12 in the list by Klemola and Marsden
(1977, A.J. 82, 849). Observations were made in the K band using
the 3.6-m telescope at La Silla. The occultation by Uranus itself
lasted from Aug. 15d22h37m15s +/- 5s to 16d00h16m03s +/- 5s UT.
Occultations by the known rings and seven additional occultations (here
labeled a through g) were timed as follows:

                 Pre-immersion Post-emersion

The times are outer edge for pre-immersion, inner edge for post-emersion.
d = duration.  f = fractional depth.

ABELL 46
     W. A. Feibelman, Goddard Space Flight Center, reports that IUE
observations of the eclipsing-binary nucleus of Abell 46 (IAUC 3480)
by McCracken, Boggess, Hobbs and himself on July 8 show a hot
component at ~ 6 x 10**4 K when corrected for interstellar reddening.
Mid-exposure of the SWP spectrogram was at phase 0.92, according to
an ephemeris supplied by H. E. Bond. Both SWP and LWR spectrograms
indicate a continuum without emission or absorption lines.
Observations at primary eclipse are planned for the near future.

1980 August 18 (3503) Brian G. Marsden
