PERIODIC COMET D'ARREST (1982e)
     A single image, of stellar appearance, of this comet was
suspected by J. Gibson on an exposure obtained on Apr. 30 with the
l.2-m Schmidt telescope at Palomar. Another single, very
questionable, image, obtained on May 16 by F. Everhart at the Chamberlin
Observatory's field station, near Denver, CO, seemed to be consistent
with the Apr. 30 observation. Confirmation was provided by
the accurate measurement of two further exposures obtained by
Gibson on May 14. Yet another questionable image, obtained by G.
Schwartz at the Oak Ridge Observatory on Apr. 23, was subsequently
reported by R. F. McCrosky and found to be compatible with the
other observations. The five precise positions are as follows:

     1982 UT             R. A. (1950) Decl.       Mag.   Observer

The indicated correction to the ephemeris on MPC 6533 (elements on
Nakano Note No. 396) is Delta-T = -0.014 day. The following prediction,
by D. K. Yeomans, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, satisfies 30 observations
1963-1977 with mean residual 1".26 and requires correction by
Delta-T = -0.05 day; perturbations by all nine planets and
nongravitational effects were considered:

       T = 1982 Sept. 14.3114 ET  Epoch = 1982 Sept. 28.0 ET
   Peri. = 176.9682                   e =   0.624811
   Node  = 138.8598   1950.0          a =   3.441162 AU
   Incl. =  19.4301                   n =   0.1543997
       q =   1.291086 AU              P =   6.383 years

COMET BOWELL (1980b)
     Total visual magnitude estimate by J. Bortle, Stormville, NY
(0.32-m reflector): Apr. 23.35 UT, 11.6. Ephemeris on IAUC 3670.

SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1316
     R. Evans, Maclean, N.S.W., informs us that he discovered this
object on 1981 Mar. 10.45 UT, not Mar. 9, as implied on IAUC
3583.
