NOVA SERPENTIS 1983
T. Iijima, S. Ortolani and L. Rosino, Asiago Astrophysical
Observatory, telex: "Spectra obtained with the 1.22-m and 1.82-m
telescopes at Asiago during Mar. 3-19 show broad emission features
of H, He I, He II 468.6 nm, N III 464.0 nm, and nebular forbidden
lines of [O III] at 500.6 and 495.9 nm. The expansion velocity
from the total halfwidth of the H emission bands is 4050 km/s.
The H and He emission bands are formed by two broad, symmetric
features with a peak separation of ~ 5400 km/s and a central narrower
emission that also appears in the echelle spectrograms (dispersion
10.2 A/mm) to be double peaked (with the components separated
by 530 km/s). The nova has already entered the nebular
stage, and the excitation is increasing. In the last spectra of
Mar. 19 He II 468.6 nm is stronger than H-beta."
NO OCCULTATIONS BY URANUS II AND PLUTO
P. Maley, Houston, TX, reports that he detected no
occultation on Mar. 25 by Umbriel (cf. IAUC 3784) while observing
at Oberon (!), N.S.W., during a 20-min interval beginning at 16h18m
UT. He also reports negative observations by P. Anderson (near
Brisbane) and by R. Price (100 km west of Canberra).
Maley also informs us that no occultation by Pluto (cf. IAUC
3780) was observed from Houston during Apr. 4d07h23m-4d07h51m UT.
TIME ADJUSTMENT ON 1983 JUNE 30
The Bureau International de l'Heure, Paris, informs us that a
positive leap second will be introduced such that the sequence of
UTC second markers will be: 1983 June 30d23h59m59s, 30d23h59m60s,
July 1d00h00m00s. From 1982 July 1 to 1983 June 30 the difference
UTC-TAI = -21s: beginning 1983 July 1 UTC-TAI = -22s.
