SUPERNOVA IN NGC 5236
     W. Wamsteker, European Space Agency, telexes the following
report by Panagia, Cacciari, Talavera, Cassatella and himself for
the European Supernova Team: "Low-resolution spectra obtained at
the Villafranca ground station for IUE on July 4, 5, 8, 11, 14 and
19 in the range 200-300 nm are typical of a type I supernova.  The
supernova was discovered well before maximum light, and short-
wavelength spectra (120-200 nm) could also be obtained.  The general
appearance of the spectrum shows the characteristic broad features
at ~ 290 and 315 nm.  Toward shorter wavelengths (< 260 nm)
the spectrum is rather constant with decreasing wavelength to 120
nm.  The brightness was increasing at all wavelengths, the increase
being larger at the longer wavelengths.  The early spectra
indicate significant spectral variations on timescales of a few
hours.  The spectrum shows broad emission (or absorption) features
that can at present not be unambiguously identified.  Some strong
interstellar lines (Fe II, Mg II) are clearly present.  A high-
resolution (0.02 nm) IUE spectrum was obtained in collaboration
with the IUE Observatory at Goddard Space Flight Center on July
14.  The observed magnitudes with the IUE fine-error sensor (
wavelength ~ 520 nm) were: July 4.86 UT, 13.00; 4.94, 12.84; 5.86,
12.52; 5.92, 12.47; 6.10, 12.44; 8.88, 12.02; 8.93, 11.97; 9.04,
11.93; 12.03, 11.70; 12.06, 11.70; 14.97, 11.53; 19.86, 11.50.
Infrared observations were made during July 8-18 by Sanchez,
Manpaso, Martinez, Gomez and Lazaro with the 1.54-m reflector at
the Observatory del Teide, Canary Islands.  These results show the
supernova also to be increasing in the JHKL bands: the supernova
shows a considerable infrared excess, which appears to be decreasing
with increasing brightness, e.g.: July 11-12, K = 10.82, J-K =
+0.25, H-K = +0.33, K-L = +1.14; July 18-19, K = 10.30, J-K =
+0.18, H-K = +0.29, K-L = +1.05 (estimated errors +/- 0.03 mag).
Observations with the European x-ray satellite EXOSAT were made on
July 5 by the Observatory staff.  In the energy range 0.1-40 keV
no flux was detected above the normal expected background."


PERIODIC COMET SCHWASSMANN-WACHMANN 1
     J.-L. Heudier, CERGA, reports that a photograph on July 12.88
UT by J.-C. Merlin with the 0.6-m Pic du Midi reflector shows a 1'
condensation of total mag 13.0.
